THE POSITION: The Equipment Operator is responsible for operating, and maintaining the more complex motorized construction equipment used in performing skilled work in the construction and maintenance of utilities, streets, and other public works. Some of the construction equipment include a backhoe, a crane (if certified), an excavator, bulldozer and articulated front loader. EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
What you will do: Duties may include but are not limited to the following: Operates backhoe, front end loader excavator, bulldozer, trencher, hydro-hammer, roller, tractor, cranes, and other related equipment used in the installation, repair and maintenance of water and sewer lines, and other public works improvements.Operates heavy equipment in excavating trenches, lowering and lifting pipe and other materials, backfilling and moving dirt, rolling street surfaces, and grading trails and small areas.Operates a portable, multi-purpose, boom-type crane and auxiliary equipment to lift heavy loads and to excavate, move, and load earth; may operate other heavy construction equipment; performs related work as required.Checks job site for potential hazards; determines precautions necessary for safe equipment operation; performs assignments in accordance with relevant safety requirements and job site conditions.Performs routine inspection and field maintenance of equipment including lubrication and minor repairs; makes operating adjustments; may make minor repairs to the equipment in the field such as changing teeth on buckets, tightening loose bolts, or tightening loose couplings on hydraulic lines.Reports any significant breakdown or malfunction of equipment to the proper authority.Performs crew work assignments when not actually engaged in equipment operation.Trains other personnel in equipment operations and maintenance.Performs other related duties as required.
CORE COMPETENCIES Knowledge of: The operation, work methods, and limitations of heavy construction equipment of the type indicated; safe work practices; California Vehicle Code and Construction Safety Orders pertaining to the operation and transportation of such equipment.Preventive maintenance to be performed on construction equipment.The service requirements of gasoline and diesel engines and heavy construction equipment.Underground pipelines and other utility cables; survey stakes, elevations, and grades.Ability to: Skillfully and safely operate a variety of moderately heavy and more complex motorized equipment; recognize the need for major equipment repairs and hazardous operating conditions and take the necessary precautions.Perform skilled construction and maintenance work in connection with equipment operation.Follow verbal and written directions.Operate heavy construction equipment in a safe and efficient manner; making minor adjustments if necessary; reading survey stakes, elevations, and grades.
